A Gift in your Will

Legacies - a guide

Pilgrims Hospices cares for people in east Kent suffering with life-limiting illnesses. The specialist palliative care extends to families and carers and is free of charge to all. The charity needs to raise over £8 million this year to continue.

A gift left in a will (a legacy) helps Pilgrims Hospices to continue its commitment to providing the highest standards of care to patients, families and carers and can help us to develop our services further. For more information about leaving money to Pilgrims, please contact Peter Simpson on 01227 812612.

Wording your will

If you would like to include Pilgrims Hospices in your will, we can provide guidelines on wording for you or your solicitor. See the examples in this section.

Updating your current will

If you already have a Will and would like to add Pilgrims to it, you can use something called a Codicil. This section will show you how.

Wording your will

Writing or amending your will is often a daunting task. We hope these pointers will guide you through the process.

Model wording for a residual bequest

Whatever is left of your estate after leaving specific bequests.
"I bequeath to Pilgrim Hospices in East Kent of 56 London Road, Canterbury, CT2 8JA (for example: a specified percentage) of my residuary estate to be applied to the general purposes of the said Charity."

Model wording for specific sums

When you know the exact amount you wish to leave.
"I bequeath to Pilgrim Hospices in East Kent of 56 London Road, Canterbury, CT2 8JA the sum of £.... to be applied to the general purposes of the said Charity."

Model wording for a donation in kind

applying to things like property, shares, jewellery, personal chattels etc.
"I bequeath to Pilgrim Hospices in East Kent of 56 London Road, Canterbury, CT2 8JA my .....................to be applied to the general purposes of the said Charity."

If you would like your gift to be restricted to the use of one hospice in particular (Canterbury, Thanet or Ashford) you may also specify this.

Updating your current will

If you wish to include a bequest to Pilgrims Hospices and have already made a will, you can write a codicil. This enables you to make any alterations you wish, including new instructions and possibly removing others.

Some rules to help you:

  • Do not cross out or write new instructions on your will, those changes will not be valid.
  • As with wills, two people need to witness you signing and dating the codicil.
  • Keep it with your will in a safe place.
  • Give a copy of the will and codicil to your executor or another trusted person with a note telling them where the original is kept.
