Tony Podd

Winner's Story - Tony Podd

Tony Podd was stunned to win £8,000 in Pilgrims Hospices second biggest Lottery Rollover in July. Originally from Folkestone, Tony now lives in Wales but has continued to support Pilgrims Hospices for the last ten years. Trish, his wife of 23 years, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994 and after a six year battle she was admitted to Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury in July 2000.

Tony reflects, “The news of Trish’s illness was devastating, not only for her but for her family and friends. She had numerous courses of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and tried new drugs in the hope that the longer she lived the more chance there was of finding a cure. When we finally got the news that she had only six months to live, my colleagues in the Fire Service were great and gave me leave to be with her. We went to see her brother in the States and made the best of what time was left. In July 2000 we had our last family holiday together in Dorset, a very special time with our grandchildren. Sadly Trish was taken ill on our last day, we rushed back to Kent and she was admitted to the Pilgrims Hospice. The staff were so good - they sorted out her medication and looked after her so well that after three weeks she was well enough to return home for the last time. Sadly on 13th August 2000, Trish passed away at home with those that loved her most.”

“Four years after Trish’s death I found love in Linda who has also had breast cancer but has been free of it for nine years. I moved to Swansea but I still kept up my Lottery tickets to help in my own little way. Before Trish died we talked of there being life after death. I told her that if there was life after death, she should let me know the six winning numbers of the National Lottery somehow.  I would like to think that on the tenth anniversary of her death Trish gave me a little help to win the Pilgrims jackpot!”
