Planning your in-patient stay

Q&A

What do I need to bring in with me?

  • Any medication you are currently taking for your doctor to view on admission. These will later be returned to you, a family member or carer to take home again.
  • Night clothes and slippers
  • Day wear
  • Toiletries (soap, toothpaste etc)
  • Squash, sweets, tissues

Laundry facilities are available on each site, however it would be appreciated if relatives or carers could take laundry home where appropriate.

Valuables
We advise you to leave any valuables at home, however if you do bring any in with you we have a safe that is available to store small items. You may also wish to have a small amount of cash for items brought from the local shops by a volunteer.

Most visitors come to the hospice between the hours of 10am and 8pm. We encourage flexible and open visiting however our staff may sometimes respectfully encourage visitors to enable patients some free time to rest for those patients who enjoy this.

Please discuss with a member of staff if you would like to visit or stay at other times.

Children are welcome.

The hospice has a policy should patients wish pets to visit. Please ask the staff if you wish to do so.

The needs and wishes of the patient are always respected as far as visiting is concerned.

What is the routine of the day?
Patients are offered a bath, shower or an assisted wash every morning. There is an opportunity for patients to do a small shop each morning e.g. newspapers, sweets, toiletries through our volunteers.

Meal times: breakfast 8am, lunch 12pm and supper 5pm.

Is there a choice of meals?
There is a varied menu on offer each day, and special diets can be accommodated. A cooked meal is served at lunchtime. At suppertime it is usual to have something lighter for example soup, sandwiches and a desert.

Tea and coffee are offered at regular times during the day. If you would like a drink at any other time please ask a member of staff who will be happy to make this available for you. A selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages is also available.

Is there a patient telephone?
Yes. A portable telephone is available for patient use. Please bring small change for this. Mobile telephones can be used but only at the discretion of the nurse in charge.

Day room
Each hospice has a comfortable day room for patients and their families to use. Each has a television and a small library.

Can my pets visit?
Yes. Although we do not actively encourage visiting by pets, we are aware that for some patients they are a treasured member of the family. When these furry visitors are in attendance we ask that, in the case of cats they are kept in appropriate carrying boxes, and dogs are kept on a lead.

Day hospice
In-patients can use the facilities available from the day hospice.

The hospice gardens are there to be enjoyed by patients and their families wherever possible. Wheelchairs are available if needed.
