Social work

Pilgrims social workers are part of the hospices Multi-Professional Team and give practical and emotional support to patients, their families, carers and friends. The social workers are registered by the General Social Care Council (www.gscc.org.uk).

The following questions often worry hospice patients and families:

  • What happens if I cannot cope at home?
  • What do we say to the children?
  • How can I talk to those close to me?
  • If I come into the hospice, who will look after me when I leave?
  • How will we cope financially?
Living with serious illness can affect every aspect of peoples' lives. These stresses and strains can become difficult to cope with and talking to a social worker, either alone or with other family members can help with this. Discussing all the available options can also help with any decisions that need to be made.

Social Workers can help patients and their families talk to children and young people close to them about what is happening and how they are coping.

Social Workers can liaise with:

  • Local Social Services (www.kent.gov.uk) and Community Health Services (www.kentandmedway.nhs.uk) regarding help at home or alternative care settings, for example nursing homes
  • Voluntary organisations and charities who may be able to provide or advise about financial and practical help e.g. Citizens Advise Bureau (www.adviceguide.org.uk)
  • Employers and schools to help them understand more about the situation
  • Benefits Agency (www.benefits-site.com) to ensure all appropriate benefits are being claimed
  • Local Authorities (www.thanet.gov.uk) and others to assist with housing needs

The Social Worker can and does advocate for the patient and the extended family network.
